Protests have been taking place across Romania since January 2017 in opposition to blatant government corruption. This one, on 10th September 2018, was partly organised by the diaspora. It marked the one month anniversary of the infamous 10th August protests which ended in violence and hundreds of protestors being taken to hospital. What began peacefully took a sudden turn after fights between aggravated protestors and riot-police took place by the front line. In a decision that has since been condemned by the rest of the EU, the riot-police beat and tear-gassed the crowd indiscriminately, including the elderly and children. Still, people continue to protest in the hope for change.
